Wasgamuwa National Park (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Wasgamuwa National Park is located in the Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts and was established in 1984 to protect wildlife displaced by the Mahaweli Development Project. The park's name is derived from the words 'Walas Gamuwa', meaning 'Woods of Bears', referring to the native population of Sri Lankan sloth bears. Covering an area of approximately 39,322 hectares, it is bounded by the Mahaweli River to the east and the Amban River to the west. Geographically, it lies within the dry zone of Sri Lanka, yet the influence of its river boundaries creates a lush and fertile environment compared to surrounding regions. Historically, the park is home to ancient ruins such as Buduruwayaya, indicating significant human settlement in antiquity. The flora consists mainly of tropical dry evergreen forests and riverine forests, while the fauna includes large herds of elephants, leopards, and over 140 recorded bird species.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is best accessed via the town of Hasalaka, with the main entrance situated at Handungamuwa. Visitors must hire a specialized safari jeep with an authorized driver to navigate the dirt tracks.
📅
Best season
The optimal viewing season for elephants and other wildlife is during the dry months from May to September, when animals consistently congregate around the shrinking waterholes and rivers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features a mix of dense dry-zone forests, expansive riverine grasslands, and rocky outcrops, traversed by rugged, unpaved dirt trails that become deeply rutted during the monsoon.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors should dress in neutral, breathable safari clothing to avoid alarming animals. Bring high-quality binoculars, a telephoto camera lens, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
Private cars must be parked near the park's main ticket office, as touring the interior requires boarding a licensed 4x4 safari vehicle equipped to handle the rough and unpredictable forest terrain.
⚠️
Safety
Wild elephants can be extremely aggressive if provoked; never encourage your driver to get too close. Be vigilant regarding ticks in the tall grass and respect all instructions given by the park rangers.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical jeep safari lasts about three to four hours, often taken in the early morning or late afternoon when wildlife is most active, though some enthusiasts book a full-day intensive excursion.
