Tissamaharama (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Tissamaharama, often simply called 'Tissa', was once the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom of Ruhuna. Today, it serves as a major religious and tourism hub in southern Sri Lanka. The town is defined by its impressive dagobas (stupas), most notably the Tissamaharama Dagoba, which is beautifully illuminated at night. Also worth visiting is the Tissa Wewa, a man-made reservoir constructed over 2,000 years ago, now a paradise for water birds. For most travelers, Tissa acts as a comfortable base for safaris into the nearby Yala National Park. The town gives a wide variety of accommodation and dining options. A walk along the banks of Tissa Wewa at sunset, as thousands of flying foxes take to the skies from the lakeside trees, is an unforgettable experience. The surrounding area is characterized by emerald rice paddies and lush vegetation. The best time to visit is from December to April. Tissamaharama is well-connected by bus from the southern coast or the hill country. The town uniquely blends ancient history with the raw wildlife of modern Sri Lanka.
