Handunugoda Tea Estate (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Handunugoda Tea Estate, also known as the Herman Tea Estate, is a unique plantation located in Titagalla, near Ahangama on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Unlike most tea estates in the central highlands, Handunugoda is a low-country plantation situated just a few kilometers from the ocean. It is world-renowned for its production of "Virgin White Tea," a rare variety that follows an ancient Chinese tradition where the tea is harvested without any human skin contact. This specialty tea is rich in antioxidants and is one of the most expensive teas in the world. The estate spans about 200 acres and is a diversified plantation that also produces rubber, cinnamon, and coconut. Visitors can explore the 150-year-old tea factory, which still uses some machinery from the colonial era. The estate is owned by the veteran planter Herman Gunaratne, who has dedicated his career to maintaining traditional and sustainable agricultural practices.
