Dondra, also known as Devinuwara ('City of Gods'), is a place of great geographical and spiritual significance. It is the southernmost tip of the island, marked by the imposing white Dondra Head Lighthouse, the tallest in the country. Devinuwara Beach gives a rugged, windswept beauty and is a symbol of the Indian Ocean's power. A special natural phenomenon nearby is Hummana Beach Dondra, where seawater shoots into the air like a fountain through a blowhole when the waves are right. Historically, Dondra was once a magnificent temple complex dedicated to Vishnu before it was destroyed in the 16th century. Today, the modern temple attracts thousands of pilgrims during the Esala Perahera festival. Gastronomy in Dondra is simple and traditional, focusing on spicy seafood dishes. The town is located just a few kilometers from Matara and is for any traveler on the south coast. The combination of colonial architecture (lighthouse) and spiritual energy makes Dondra unique.
