Unawatuna Beach (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Unawatuna Beach is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic coastal destinations, situated approximately five kilometers southeast of the historic city of Galle. The beach is renowned for its scenic semi-circular bay, protected by a dual offshore coral reef that ensures calm waters suitable for swimming year-round. Historically, Unawatuna is linked to the Ramayana epic; local legend states that a fragment of the Himalayan mountains fell here when Hanuman was searching for medicinal herbs. This mythological heritage is mirrored in the region's rich biodiversity, particularly within its mangrove forests and coral gardens. Geographically, the bay features crystal-clear waters and golden sands lined with coconut palms. The area has transitioned from a quiet fishing village into a thriving tourist hub, famous for its boutique hotels, seafood restaurants, and diving centers. Despite suffering significant damage during the 2004 tsunami, the town has been fully rebuilt with modernized facilities. Today, it serves as a key area for marine conservation, specifically for sea turtle hatcheries located nearby. Its proximity to the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort makes it a preferred base for travelers exploring the southern province.
