Hikkaduwa National Park (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Hikkaduwa National Park is a significant marine protected area located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. Spanning approximately 101 hectares, it was designated a national park in 2002, having previously been established as one of the country's first marine sanctuaries in 1979. The park's centerpiece is its fringing coral reef, which supports an enormous diversity of marine flora and fauna, including about 60 different species of hard corals. Over 170 fish species have been documented in the waters, making it an essential hub for marine research and ecological tourism. Frequent inhabitants include sea turtles, particularly the hawksbill and green sea turtles, which are regularly sighted in the area. Despite its small size, the park holds great ecological importance for protecting the coastline from erosion. In recent decades, the reef has suffered from the impacts of El Niño and rising sea temperatures, necessitating increased conservation efforts. Management is handled by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, which monitors the reef's health and regulates human activity.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Optimal conditions for marine observation are typically found during the drier period from November to April, when the water is usually at its clearest and the sea remains relatively calm.
🌅
Best time of day
The morning hours often provide the best underwater visibility before the wind picks up and churns up waves. Sea turtles are also often easier to spot in the calm, quiet waters of the early day.
📜
Etiquette
Never touch the corals or sea turtles, as this causes lasting damage to the fragile reef ecosystem. Use strictly coral-friendly, biodegradable sunscreen when snorkeling in these protected waters.
🎒
What to bring
A well-fitting snorkel set and water shoes are essential for safely exploring the shallow reef. A UV-protection rash guard effectively shields against the intense tropical sun during your water activities.
🧭
Getting there
The national park is located right on the coast and is easily accessible via the country's main roads. Glass-bottom boat tours and snorkeling excursions generally depart directly from the nearby beaches.
🦌
What to expect
Observe the water attentively and move calmly; rapid movements easily startle marine life. Give the animals plenty of personal space and patiently wait to see if they decide to approach you naturally.
