Laxapana Hydroelectric Power Station (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

The Laxapana Hydroelectric Power Station is a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's energy supply and part of the Laxapana Complex in the Nuwara Eliya District. It harnesses the waters of the Kehelgamu Oya, a major tributary of the Kelani River. The facility consists of two stages: Old Laxapana, commissioned in 1950 as the country's first major hydro project, and New Laxapana, completed in 1974. With a total installed capacity exceeding 150 megawatts (MW), the station contributes significantly to meeting the base load of the national power grid. Water is channeled through tunnels from the Norton Bridge and Canyon dams to the power house. Beyond electricity generation, the system aids in regulating water flow for downstream agriculture. The station symbolizes Sri Lanka's transition towards renewable energy and the vision of D.J. Wimalasurendra, the 'father of hydropower' in Sri Lanka.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
As one of Sri Lanka's oldest and most iconic energy facilities, this power station harnesses the tremendous natural force of the Laxapana falls. It stands as a pivotal milestone in the country's industrial development and electrical grid history.
🚪
Visiting
Due to strict safety and security protocols typical for critical infrastructure, the interior of the power station is normally closed to the general public. However, the impressive exterior architecture and the surrounding water management systems can be seen from outside.
👀
Where to view it
The most spectacular perspectives are gathered from the viewpoints facing the Laxapana waterfalls, allowing visitors to comprehend the sheer scale of the drop that powers the hidden turbines in the valley below.
🧺
Local products
While the station itself does not yield consumer products, the surrounding highland areas are renowned for producing some of Sri Lanka's finest Ceylon teas, which are often available for purchase in nearby towns.
📆
Active season
The power generation is continuous, but the visual impact of the falls and the associated spillways is most dramatic during the monsoon seasons when the water volumes reach their absolute peak, creating a thunderous atmosphere.
Nearby
A trip to the Laxapana area is perfectly combined with hiking through the wide-open Central Highlands, visiting sprawling tea estates, and ascending the revered pilgrimage site of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada).
