Gal Oya National Park (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Gal Oya National Park was established in 1954 and is located in eastern Sri Lanka, spanning the Ampara and Badulla Districts. It was primarily created to protect the catchment area of the Senanayake Samudraya, the country's largest reservoir, which was formed during the Gal Oya development project. The protected area covers approximately 25,900 hectares and is characterized by mountainous terrain, dense evergreen forests, and vast grasslands known as savannas. A unique feature of the park is the opportunity to witness swimming elephants as they cross the reservoir's waters between various islands. In addition to its famous elephants, the park is home to leopards, sloth bears, water buffaloes, and an exceptional variety of waterfowl. Historically, the region was a stronghold for the indigenous Vedda people, whose cultural heritage remains significant in the area today. Boat safaris provide a distinctive way to explore the park's biodiversity from the water.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is reachable by road from Ampara or Bibile, but the most fascinating and unique access for wildlife viewing is often via organized boat safaris operating on the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir.
📅
Best season
The dry season, spanning from March to July, is generally considered the optimal time to witness the famous swimming elephants, as receding water levels encourage them to forage across the reservoir's islands.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The protected area encompasses a diverse landscape of dense evergreen forests, open savannas, and the massive reservoir, with a significant portion of guided explorations taking place directly on the water.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors should pack light, breathable clothing, robust sun protection for exposed boat trips, strong insect repellent for any forest walks, and reliable binoculars or zoom lenses for distant wildlife.
🅿️
Parking
Parking facilities are typically available at the official park entrances and the main boat safari departure points, providing a secure place to leave vehicles while visitors embark on guided excursions.
⚠️
Safety
It is strictly mandatory to remain inside the safari boats and carefully follow the guide's instructions to avoid provoking wild elephants or crocodiles; swimming in the reservoir is strictly prohibited.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical boat safari lasts around two to three hours, which is usually sufficient time to properly observe the abundant birdlife and, with some luck, the iconic swimming elephants in their natural habitat.
