Hakgala Botanical Garden (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Hakgala Botanical Garden is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,745 meters above sea level, making it the second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Located along the Nuwara Eliya-Badulla road, it was established in 1861 by George Henry Kendrick Thwaites as an experimental plantation for Cinchona cultivation. The garden lies at the foot of the Hakgala Rock, which rises to about 2,200 meters, creating a unique microclimate suitable for temperate plants. It is particularly famous for its extensive rose garden, which features over 100 varieties, and its impressive collection of ferns and orchids. In local folklore, the area is believed to be part of the Ashok Vatika mentioned in the Ramayana, where Sita was held captive. Today, it serves as a vital conservation site for montane flora and remains a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
