Hakgala (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Hakgala is a prominent rocky mountain in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, reaching an altitude of 2,170 meters. It is world-renowned primarily for the Hakgala Botanical Garden located at its base, established in 1861 for the research of Cinchona trees. The name 'Hakgala' translates to 'Jawbone Rock,' referring to the shape of the mountain. In Hindu mythology, Hakgala is associated with the Ramayana epic; it is said that Hanuman deposited a part of the Himalayas here. The Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve protects the unique flora and fauna of the montane rainforests on the summit and steep slopes. The garden is particularly famous for its rose collections and orchids, as well as the occurrence of endemic primates like the purple-faced langur. Due to its temperate climate, the region is a popular recreational area.
