Horton Plains National Park (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Horton Plains National Park is a protected montane plateau in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, situated at an average elevation of 2,100 meters. Designated as a national park in 1988, it was later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010 as part of the 'Central Highlands of Sri Lanka'. The landscape is characterized by rolling montane grasslands (Patana), mystical cloud forests, and cascading waterfalls such as the renowned Baker’s Falls. Its most famous landmark is 'World’s End', a sheer precipice with a vertical drop of approximately 870 meters that has wide-open views of the southern plains. The park is a biodiversity hotspot with many endemic species of flora and fauna, including the Sambar deer and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. The climate is markedly cooler and windier than the lowlands, often shrouded in dense mist that feeds the high-altitude ecosystem. Horton Plains also serves as the critical watershed for Sri Lanka's three major rivers: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. To preserve its pristine nature, strict anti-pollution regulations are enforced, and visitor access is limited to designated hiking trails.
