San Pedro de Arlanza Monastery (Spain)

Weather…

The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, located near Hortigüela in the province of Burgos, is often called the 'Cradle of Castile' and is one of Spain's most significant monumental ruins. Founded in 912 by Count Fernán González and his wife Sancha, it served for centuries as the religious and political heart of the emerging County of Castile. The monastery's architecture blends elements of Visigothic, Mozarabic, and Romanesque art, though the current ruins primarily display Gothic and Baroque modifications. Despite the decay following the 19th-century church property confiscations, the monumental three-aisled church and the massive bell tower remain impressive. The church once housed the tomb of Fernán González before it was moved to the Collegiate Church of Covarrubias. Its pretty setting on the banks of the Arlanza River gives the site a mystical atmosphere that attracts numerous visitors and historians every year.
