Valladolid is the administrative center of Castile and León, strategically located at the confluence of the Pisuerga and Esgueva rivers. It served as the capital of the Spanish Empire from 1601 to 1606 during the reign of Philip III, a period of immense architectural and political influence. The city is home to the Plaza Mayor, the first regular rectangular square in Spain, which later influenced the design of Madrid's central plaza. Valladolid has deep historical ties to Miguel de Cervantes and Christopher Columbus, the latter of whom died here in 1506. Modern Valladolid is a vital industrial center, notably hosting large-scale automotive manufacturing facilities for Renault. The city is also celebrated for its solemn Holy Week processions and the Seminci International Film Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious cinema events in the country.
