Gormaz Castle (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Gormaz in the province of Soria is the largest medieval fortress in Europe and an impressive testament to the Moorish presence on the Iberian Peninsula. The current complex was built in the 10th century by the Caliphate of Córdoba on the strategic border with the Christian north. With a perimeter exceeding 1,200 meters and featuring 28 towers, it sits atop a narrow hilltop ridge overlooking the Duero River. Its architecture is purely Caliphate in style, recognizable by its characteristic horseshoe arches and massive masonry. During the Middle Ages, the castle was heavily contested and changed hands several times until it definitively fell to the Christians in 1060 under Ferdinand I. During this era, the legendary El Cid served as its governor. Despite its current ruined state, the fortress conveys monumental grandeur and provides sweeping views of the Castilian plateau. It is an unparalleled example of military engineering from the Muslim period in Spain.
