Sierra de Urbión (Spain)

Weather…

The Sierra de Urbión is a compact yet imposing mountain massif that forms a significant portion of the northern Iberian System, rising on the borders between the provinces of Soria, Burgos, and La Rioja. The highest and eponymous point of this chain is the Pico de Urbión, whose rocky summit reaches an altitude of 2228 meters. This mountainous region was heavily shaped by the glaciers of the last Ice Age, which is strikingly evident today in the form of steep, bowl-shaped cirques and dark, mysterious glacial lakes. The most famous of these mountain lakes is the legendary Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon), which, surrounded by dramatic rock walls and dense pine forests, exudes a profoundly mystical atmosphere. Hydrologically, the Sierra de Urbión is of outstanding importance to the Iberian Peninsula, as the mighty Douro (Duero) River originates on its flanks, crossing the entire north of Spain and Portugal on its long journey before finally emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.
