Aranda de Duero is the capital of the renowned Ribera del Duero wine region, in the province of Burgos, Castile and León. The city is situated on the banks of the Duero River and is an essential destination for wine enthusiasts. Its most unique feature is a vast network of underground wine cellars, known as 'bodegas', that stretch for 7 kilometres beneath the old town. Many of these cellars date back to the Middle Ages and can be visited on guided tours, which often include a tasting of the excellent local red wines. Culinarily, Aranda de Duero is famous for one specialty: 'lechazo asado', a suckling lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven. This traditional dish is cooked to perfection in the town's 'asadores' (roasting houses) and is an unforgettable gastronomic experience. Beyond wine and food, the city also gives remarkable historical architecture. Particularly noteworthy are the Church of Santa María la Real, with its magnificent Isabelline Gothic facade, and the Church of San Juan, which hosted the Council of Aranda in 1473. The city is easily accessible from Madrid and Burgos via the A-1 motorway. The best time to visit is in autumn during the grape harvest, when the landscape is awash with warm colours and numerous wine festivals take place. Spring, with its mild temperatures, is also convenient. Aranda de Duero has a fascinating mix of wine culture, gastronomy, and history that delights every visitor.
