Gijón is the largest city in the Principality of Asturias, located on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. Its history reaches back over 2,000 years to Roman times, with the Campo Valdés Roman baths serving as a primary archaeological site. Gijón functioned as a major industrial port for coal and steel throughout the 20th century, though it has successfully transitioned into a hub for tourism and services. The city is home to the Universidad Laboral, the largest building in Spain by floor area, spanning 270,000 square meters. The historic heart of Gijón is the Cimavilla district, a former fishing village on a peninsula that now features Eduardo Chillida’s monumental sculpture, 'Elogio del Horizonte.' San Lorenzo Beach stretches for 1.5 kilometers along the coast, defining the city’s social and recreational life. Gijón is also the center of Asturian cider culture, hosting numerous festivals dedicated to this traditional drink.
