Puerto del Rosario is the capital and largest city of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. Originally known as Puerto de Cabras (Goat Harbor), it was renamed in the 19th century and quickly developed into the island's main port and administrative center. Today, it is a bustling city, often the first point of contact for visitors arriving by ferry or plane, as Fuerteventura's international airport (FUE) is located just a few kilometers to the south. The city itself is distinguished by an open-air sculpture park, with over one hundred works of art distributed throughout the streets and along the promenade. Along the seaside promenade, Avenida Marítima, there are numerous restaurants and bars with views of the harbor. The city beach, Playa Chica, gives a convenient opportunity for a refreshing swim. Cultural attractions include the Casa Museo Unamuno, dedicated to the famous Spanish writer who lived here in exile, and the Ecomuseo La Alcogida, which showcases traditional island life. Puerto del Rosario is the convenient starting point for exploring Fuerteventura's diverse landscapes, from the vast sand dunes of Corralejo in the north to the pristine beaches of Jandía in the south. The city is the island's transportation hub, with a well-developed bus network connecting all major towns. Thanks to its mild climate, Fuerteventura is a year-round destination, with the summer months being good for beach holidays and the slightly cooler but still warm winter months being well-suited for active tourists.
