Madi Hills

The Madi Hills are located in the southernmost part of South Sudan, near the border with Uganda and surrounding the town of Nimule. They are named after the Madi ethnic group, who have inhabited and cultivated this region for centuries. The hills rise to average elevations between 600 and 950 meters, providing sweeping views over the Bahr el Jebel valley, the local name for the White Nile in this stretch. Geologically, the Madi Hills consist of rugged rocky outcrops and a savanna-woodland mosaic, underpinned by metamorphic basement rocks. Their immediate proximity to Nimule National Park makes them a crucial corridor for wildlife, particularly elephants and various species of antelope migrating between habitats. The region enjoys a tropical climate with a distinct rainy season, which facilitates productive agriculture in the fertile valleys. Historically, the area was a significant junction for trade routes linking the Sudan basin with the Lake Victoria region.
