Dufile Fort is a historically significant defensive installation on the western bank of the White Nile, right on the border between South Sudan and Uganda. The fort was established in 1879 by Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the then-governor of Equatoria Province, to defend the region against advancing Mahdists. Geographically, it is situated at a strategic point where the river forms a natural barrier while controlling access to the fertile lands in the south. The facility consisted of earthworks, trenches, and brick buildings, of which impressive remnants still survive today. Dufile was the site of fierce battles during the Mahdist Revolt and later served as a base for Belgian and British troops during the colonial era. The fort's cultural significance lies in its role as a symbol of resistance and the complex intertwining of European, Egyptian, and local interests in the 19th century. Archaeological investigations have unearthed numerous artifacts documenting the soldiers' daily lives and contemporary military technology. Today, the fort is a protected historical monument and a potential destination for cultural tourism in the border region.
