Hongdo
Hongdo, meaning Red Island, is named for the crimson hue of its quartzite cliffs, which glow intensely during sunset. The entire island is designated as a Natural Monument, ensuring its pristine environment is strictly preserved for future generations. The highlight of any visit is a sightseeing boat tour that circulates the island, showcasing the 10 Wonders of Hongdo, including dramatic sea arches, hidden caves, and bizarre rock shapes carved by the wind and waves. Because motor vehicles are not allowed on the island, it maintains a tranquil and clean atmosphere excellent for a peaceful coastal retreat. Seafood lovers can enjoy the catch of the day at small stalls and restaurants near the colorful harbor. Accessible by ferry from Mokpo, the journey has a scenic transition into a world of natural splendor far from the mainland. Summer and autumn are the best times to experience its clear emerald waters and animated evening skies. Hongdo is often cited as the most beautiful island in Korea due to its dramatic verticality and unique geological colors.
