Wonderwerk Cave (South Africa)

Weather…

Wonderwerk Cave, located in the Northern Cape province, is a unique geological and archaeological landmark and one of the oldest occupied sites in the world. Stretching 139 meters into the base of a hill, the cave contains a massive sequence of deposits that span nearly two million years of human history. The site is globally renowned for providing some of the earliest evidence of controlled fire use by hominids, dating back approximately one million years. In addition to stone tools from the Acheulean and Oldowan periods, the cave features San rock art on its walls, some of which is up to 10,000 years old. Archaeological research here has offered critical data on long-term environmental changes and the development of hunting strategies in Southern Africa. The name 'Wonderwerk' is Afrikaans for 'miracle' or 'wonder,' reflecting the awe inspired by the cave's scale. Today, it is a National Heritage Site and continues to be a focal point for international research into the deep history of humanity.
