Kalahari National Park (South Africa)

Weather…

The Kalahari wildlife region, a core part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, spans the red dune landscape in the north of the Northern Cape province along the Botswana border. This arid region is not a true desert but a semi-desert featuring dry riverbeds like the Nossob and Auob, which rarely flow but provide vital waterholes for the fauna. The area is famous for its black-maned Kalahari lions, which have adapted to extreme temperature fluctuations and the sparse environment. Besides lions, the park is home to large herds of gemsbok (oryx), springbok, and predators such as cheetahs, leopards, and playful meerkats. The vegetation primarily consists of grasses, acacias, and deep-rooted camelthorn trees that offer shade and nourishment. Formally established in 1931, the park was Africa's first transfrontier conservation area, allowing animals to migrate freely between South Africa and Botswana. The vast, open landscape provides photographers with unique opportunities to capture wildlife against the backdrop of brilliant red sand dunes. The starlit nights of the Kalahari are among the darkest and most impressive in the world.
