Finsch Diamond Mine (South Africa)

Weather…

The Finsch Diamond Mine is located near Lime Acres in the Northern Cape Province, approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Kimberley. Discovered in 1961 by Allister Fincham, the mine entered full production in 1967. The operation centers on a large kimberlite pipe that ranks among the most productive diamond deposits in South Africa. Originally developed as an open-cast mine, it transitioned to underground operations in 1991 using sophisticated block caving methods. In 2011, Petra Diamonds acquired the mine from De Beers and has since invested heavily in upgrading its technical infrastructure. Finsch is well-regarded for producing high-quality gem diamonds and occasional large specimen stones. As a major employer in the sparsely populated Northern Cape, the mine is essential to the regional economy and local development. The site's geology features a kimberlite pipe hosted within ancient dolomite formations.
