Rooge Hills (South Africa)

Weather…

The Rooge Hills (Roggeveld Mountains) are situated in the Western and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa, forming part of the Great Escarpment at the western edge of the Karoo plateau. The name is derived from the wild rye that once grew abundantly in this arid region. The range reaches elevations of up to 1700 meters and is notorious for having one of the coldest climates in South Africa, with winter temperatures frequently dropping well below freezing. The nearby town of Sutherland is recognized as the coldest permanently inhabited place in the country. Because of the clear, dry air and minimal light pollution, the region hosts the South African Astronomical Observatory, featuring the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Geologically, the area is dominated by the Beaufort Group of the Karoo Supergroup, consisting of sandstones and shales. The vegetation is sparse, comprised mainly of drought-resistant succulents and low shrubs characteristic of the Karoo biome. Economically, the territory is used almost exclusively for extensive sheep farming, which has adapted to the harsh environmental conditions.
