Kgalagadi
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a vast wilderness spanning the border between South Africa and Botswana, offering a raw and unfiltered safari experience. Unlike the lush bushveld of other parks, Kgalagadi is defined by red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, and the dry beds of the Auob and Nossob rivers. It is legendary for its black-maned Kalahari lions, which are among the largest and most majestic in Africa. Cheetahs, leopards, and large herds of gemsbok and springbok are also frequently sighted against the desert landscape. Birdwatchers will find the park particularly rewarding, with numerous birds of prey like the Martial Eagle patrolling the skies. The park’s remote camps offer a deep sense of isolation and tranquility, excellent for nature photography. Dining is usually a self-catered affair at the camps, focusing on traditional braai (barbecue) culture. Access is typically via Upington, followed by a several-hour drive to Twee Rivieren gate. The best time for wildlife viewing is during the cooler months from May to September, when animals congregate near waterholes.
