De Aar is a critical railway junction located in the heart of the Karoo semi-desert within the Northern Cape province. Its name is derived from the Dutch word for 'vein,' referencing the underground watercourses that sustain life in this arid region. The town was formally established in 1903 on the farm De Aar after the Cape government identified the site as a strategic railway link. For decades, De Aar remained the second most important railway interchange in South Africa after Johannesburg, connecting lines from Cape Town, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, and Namibia. Recently, the town has transitioned into a renewable energy hub, leveraging the region's intense solar radiation and consistent wind patterns. Several massive solar and wind farms have been developed in the vicinity, revitalizing the local economy and positioning the town as a leader in green energy.
