Zeila Ancient Port (Somalia)

Weather…

Zeila (or Saylac) is an ancient port city on the Gulf of Aden that once served as the capital of the Adal Sultanate and one of the most prominent trade centers in the Horn of Africa. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the city was a vital junction for trade between the Ethiopian highlands, Arabia, and India. Zeila was also an early center of Islam in Africa; it is home to the Masjid al-Qiblatayn (Mosque of the Two Qiblas), whose ruins still testify to the dual prayer directions toward Jerusalem and Mecca. During the Middle Ages, Zeila flourished as a gateway for exporting ivory, gold, and slaves, while importing textiles and spices. The cityscape was once characterized by magnificent coral stone buildings and mosques, many of which now exist only as ruins. The city's strategic importance waned with the rise of Djibouti and Berbera in the late 19th century. Nevertheless, Zeila remains a culturally and historically indispensable site, symbolizing the deep-seated connections between the African continent and the Islamic world.
