After the abbey lost its importance in the 16th century and was eventually abandoned, the roof collapsed in 1786, giving the site its current, almost mystical atmosphere. Just a short walk away on the hill of Montesiepi is the Rotonda, a Romanesque chapel housing the famous 'sword in the stone.' According to legend, Saint Galgano thrust his sword into the rock to renounce his knightly past and begin a life as a hermit.
