San Gimignano is a 13th-century time capsule. Perched on a hilltop, the town is instantly recognizable from afar by its unique medieval skyline. During the Middle Ages, local noble families competed to build the tallest towers as symbols of their wealth and dominance. Of the 72 towers that once reached for the sky, 14 remain today, giving the town its distinctive character. The Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo form the historic heart, surrounded by aristocratic palaces and churches housing masterwork frescoes. Beyond its stone towers, San Gimignano is celebrated for Vernaccia, the first Italian wine to be granted DOC status. The town's remarkable preservation is largely due to its economic decline following the Black Death in 1348, which prevented further major construction for centuries.
