Zeila, also known as Saylac, is one of the oldest port cities in the Horn of Africa, located in the Awdal region of Somaliland near the border with Djibouti. The city was once the magnificent capital of the Adal Sultanate and a major hub of medieval trade between Africa, Arabia, and India. Historically, it is recognized as one of the first locations where Islam took root on the African continent, evidenced by the ruins of the 7th-century Masjid al-Qiblatayn. During the 16th century, Zeila was a contested base between the Ottoman Empire and the Portuguese maritime power before falling under British protection in the late 19th century. Today, the city’s economic significance has diminished due to the silting of its harbor and competition from Djibouti, yet it remains an archaeological treasure. Its architecture features coral-stone buildings and Ottoman influences, which have partially survived despite the ravages of the civil war. Zeila now serves as a profound symbol of the Somali coast's rich cultural and religious heritage.
