Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore (Italy)

Weather…

The Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is the mother house of the Olivetan Benedictine Order, dramatically situated amidst the characteristic clay hills of Crete Senesi south of Siena. Founded in 1313 by Bernardo Tolomei, a Sienese nobleman who withdrew to this remote location to lead a life of prayer and simplicity, the abbey remains a vital spiritual center. The complex is distinguished by its monumental red brick architecture, which stands in stark contrast to the surrounding gray landscape. Its artistic centerpiece is the Great Cloister, adorned with an extraordinary fresco cycle depicting the life of Saint Benedict in 36 scenes; begun by Luca Signorelli in 1495 and completed by Il Sodoma. The abbey church features masterful wood-inlay choir stalls by Fra Giovanni da Verona, and the site also houses a significant library and a historic pharmacy. Today, Monte Oliveto Maggiore continues as an active monastery where monks maintain the tradition of Gregorian chant and produce artisanal products such as wine and olive oil.
