Old Vine House

The Old Vine House in Maribor is a globally unique site, famous for the 400-year-old vine that grows across its historic facade. This vine, of the 'Žametovka' variety, is officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest living noble vine in the world. The building itself dates back to the 16th century and was once a part of the city's defensive walls along the Drava River. Today, it has been transformed into a visitor center, wine museum, and tasting room dedicated to the rich viticultural heritage of the Podravje region. Every year, the ceremonial harvest of the old vine produces a small quantity of wine, which is bottled in specially designed small flasks and used as a prestigious gift for visiting dignitaries and celebrities. The vine's survival through centuries of conflict, fires, and the phylloxera blight is seen as a symbol of Slovenian resilience and tradition. Located in the characterful Lent district, the house is the focal point for many cultural celebrations, especially the Old Vine Festival held each autumn.
