The Pohorje Mountains are an expansive, forested range in northeastern Slovenia, stretching south of the Drava River. Geologically distinct from the rest of the Slovenian Alps, the range is composed primarily of silicate rocks, which has fostered the development of numerous peat bogs and small lakes, such as the Lovrenc Lakes. The highest peak is Črni vrh, reaching an elevation of 1,543 meters above sea level. The area is almost entirely blanketed by dense spruce forests, providing a habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species. Pohorje is nationally famous for the Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort, which annually hosts the 'Golden Fox' Women's World Cup alpine skiing races. Beyond winter sports, the region provides an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails during the summer, complemented by traditional mountain huts serving local cuisine.
