Vihorlat Primeval Beech Forests

Morské oko (Sea Eye) is the largest lake in the Vihorlat Mountains and the third largest natural lake in Slovakia. It was formed by a massive landslide that dammed a stream valley following ancient volcanic activity. The lake and its surrounding primeval beech forests are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to their outstanding ecological value. The water's color shifts between deep green and turquoise, and its clarity is remarkable, though swimming and fishing are strictly prohibited to protect the environment. A gentle educational trail circles the lake, taking about an hour to complete and providing insights into the local flora and fauna. For a more challenging adventure, a hike to the Sninský kameň rock formation has a remarkable bird's-eye view of the lake and the vast plains to the south. A welcoming wooden hunting lodge, formerly owned by the Széchenyi family, sits on the shore and now functions as a visitor center. The area is a sanctuary of peace, characterized by the absence of mass tourism and motorized noise. The most scenic season is autumn, when the surrounding beech trees turn brilliant shades of gold and orange, reflecting perfectly in the still water. Access is via the towns of Sobrance or Snina to a designated forest parking lot, followed by a pleasant 15-minute walk to the shore. Facilities are limited to preserve the area's wild character, so bringing your own snacks and water is advised. Morské oko is an under-the-radar destination in Eastern Slovakia, offering a raw and powerful connection with nature.
