St. Michael's Chapel Košice (Slovakia)

Weather…

St. Michael's Chapel in Košice is a gem of Gothic architecture, located directly adjacent to St. Elisabeth Cathedral. Built in the second half of the 14th century, it originally served as a cemetery chapel and an ossuary. The building is designed with two levels: the lower part was used for storing bones, while the upper level was dedicated to masses for the souls of the deceased. The chapel is named after Archangel Michael, the patron of the dead, who is depicted in a relief above the main entrance. In 1903, the chapel underwent extensive restoration aimed at removing later Baroque additions and restoring its original Gothic purity. Inside, the chapel features medieval wall paintings and intricate stonework. As part of the national cultural monument complex, it stands as one of the oldest and most architecturally significant structures in Košice's historic center.
