U. S. Steel Košice is the dominant heavy industry enterprise in eastern Slovakia and one of the largest integrated steel producers in Central Europe. Originally founded in the 1960s as the East Slovak Ironworks (VSŽ), the plant underwent comprehensive modernization following its acquisition by the American United States Steel Corporation in 2000. Spanning a vast area, the complex includes large blast furnaces, coking plants, and state-of-the-art rolling mills. The company primarily produces flat-rolled steel products, which are indispensable for the European automotive industry, mechanical engineering, and the manufacturing of household appliances and packaging. As by far the largest private employer in the region, the plant plays a crucial role in the economic stability and social development of the entire eastern Slovak territory.

The huge plant site is not open to the public for security reasons, but can be viewed from various observation points. Along the surrounding roads and from the nearby highway, the production facilities are clearly visible.
Where to view it
A recommended viewpoint is the hill near the Košice suburb of Ťahanovce, offering a panoramic view of the entire steelworks. The pedestrian bridge over the Hornád near the plant also provides a good insight into the facility.
