Battle of Rozhanovce (Slovakia)

Weather…

The battlefield of Rozhanovce near Košice marks the site of one of the most decisive military conflicts in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. On June 15, 1312, the forces of King Charles Robert of Anjou faced the combined army of the powerful Aba family and the troops of the oligarch Matthew Csák. The battle was exceptionally fierce and is remembered as one of the most significant cavalry engagements of the 14th century. Although the King's forces were initially struggling, the intervention of armed burghers from Košice and the Zipser Saxons secured a royal victory. This success broke the power of the provincial oligarchs in the eastern part of the kingdom and solidified Charles Robert's central authority. The victory at Rozhanovce effectively ended the era of 'petty kings' in Hungary, paving the way for the nation's prosperity under the Angevin dynasty. Today, a memorial near the village of Rozhanovce commemorates this pivotal historical event.
