Kapušany Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Kapušany Castle was constructed in the 13th century on the Zámčisko hill to guard the vital trade route leading from Prešov towards Poland. First mentioned in written records in 1248, it originally served as a royal fortress before being granted to the Kapy noble family, who held it for over three centuries. During the 15th century, the castle was occupied by the troops of John Jiskra, and it later underwent significant Renaissance style fortifications in the 16th century to counter the Ottoman threat. The fortress played a role in several anti-Habsburg uprisings, leading to its repeated siege and partial destruction by various factions. In 1715, following a decree by the Hungarian Diet, the castle was intentionally demolished to ensure it could no longer serve as a rebel stronghold. Currently, the prominent ruins of the two main towers and palace walls stand as a protected cultural monument, attracting hikers and history enthusiasts to the Šariš region.
