Kapušany Castle Ruins (Slovakia)

Weather…

Kapušany Castle ruins are perched on the steep volcanic hill of Zámčisko, overlooking the strategic road between Prešov and Poland. Established in the 13th century as a royal fortress, it later became the hereditary seat of the Kapy family, who significantly expanded its fortifications in the 15th century. The castle features a dual-courtyard design with a prominent central square tower that once served as a last line of defense. Throughout the turbulent 16th and 17th centuries, it played a key role in the border defenses against the Ottomans and during the anti-Habsburg uprisings. In 1715, following a decree by the Hungarian Diet, the castle was intentionally set on fire and demolished to prevent its use by future insurgents. Recently, extensive conservation efforts have stabilized the ruins, making the site safe for visitors who come to enjoy the panoramic views of the Šariš highlands and the Slanské Hills.
