Gabčíkovo is located in the southern part of the Great Rye Island and is world-famous primarily for its hydroelectric power plant of the same name. This gigantic structure on the Danube not only generates power but also regulates water levels and enables international shipping. A highlight for visitors is watching the massive locks in action, where huge river cruise ships and freighters are raised or lowered within minutes. The surroundings of Gabčíkovo are a paradise for nature lovers and athletes. The flat landscape of the Danube floodplains is excellent for extensive cycling trips on the international Danube Cycle Path. The Danube oxbows also offer handy conditions for canoeists and anglers, who will find a rich variety of flora and fauna here. In the town itself, there is an interesting Renaissance castle, currently used as a social facility. The town is best reached by car or bicycle from Bratislava or Dunajská Streda. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn when the weather is convenient for outdoor activities. In the local taverns, one can enjoy traditional fish dishes and regional wines.
