Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Plant (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Plant is the largest facility of its kind in Slovakia, situated on the Danube River south of Bratislava. It was constructed between 1977 and 1992 as part of a joint project with Hungary, which later led to significant international legal disputes. The plant serves multiple critical purposes: generating carbon-free electricity, providing flood protection, and improving navigation conditions on the Danube. It features eight turbines with a total installed capacity of 720 megawatts, producing approximately 2,200 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, roughly 10% of Slovakia's total consumption. A remarkable engineering feat is the pair of lock chambers, which handle a height difference of up to 24 meters and are among the largest in Europe. Despite environmental controversies, the project has stabilized the riverbed and created new opportunities for water-based recreation in the Danube floodplains. Today, the plant is not only an economic cornerstone but also a popular destination for technical tourism.
