Beckov Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Beckov Castle is a grand ruin perched on a steep 60-meter-high rocky cliff overlooking the Váh River. The fortress was established in the 12th century as a royal castle to guard the northwest borders of the Hungarian Kingdom. It reached its zenith at the end of the 14th century under the ownership of the Polish noble Stibor of Stiboricz, who transformed it into a magnificent Gothic residence. Later, the Bánffy family reinforced the castle with Renaissance fortifications to withstand Ottoman raids. A catastrophic fire in 1729 marked the end of the castle's habitation, leading to its gradual decay into a ruin. Today, it is a national cultural monument, attracting visitors with its preserved external walls and the restored Chapel of St. Ladislaus. The castle regularly hosts medieval festivals and jousting tournaments that bring its history to life. Given its dramatic location and well-preserved remains, Beckov is among the most photogenic medieval landmarks in Slovakia.
