The Toncoli Forest Reserve is located in the Tonkolili District of the Northern Province of Sierra Leone and, with an area of approximately 471 square kilometers, is one of the largest contiguous forest protected areas in the country. Established in 1954, it plays a central role in national forestry and nature conservation. The landscape is characterized by tropical moist forests and extensive hill ranges that form an important barrier against progressive desertification from the north. The reserve hosts an impressive diversity of tree species, including Khaya and Entandrophragma, which are indispensable for the ecological stability of the region. Besides its forestry significance, Toncoli is a sanctuary for endangered animal species such as the chimpanzee and various antelope species. The hydrological function of the forest is also significant, as it protects the catchment area for tributaries of the Rokel River.
