The Hijaz Mountains run parallel to the Red Sea coast in western Saudi Arabia, forming a rugged barrier that separates the Tihama coastal plain from the central Nejd plateau. This mountain range is part of the Arabian Shield, composed of ancient Pre-Cambrian volcanic and metamorphic rocks that date back hundreds of millions of years.
