Micolo Coral Protection Zone

The Micolo Coral Protection Zone is part of São Tomé and Príncipe's efforts to protect its rich marine ecosystems. The islands' coral reefs may not be as extensive as in other parts of the world, but they feature a unique species composition, including some endemic species. These reefs are important breeding grounds for fish and protect the coastlines from erosion. The protection zone near Praia Micolo prohibits or restricts destructive fishing practices, such as the use of nets and dynamite. Instead, sustainable methods are promoted. The initiative also works to raise awareness about the threats facing the reefs, including climate change, land-based pollution, and overfishing. Coral restoration, by planting coral fragments in 'coral gardens', is also being trialed to help revive damaged areas.
