💡 Tips
- Visit the striking colonial church on the main square early in the morning for the best lighting and fewer crowds.
- Embrace the local 'leve-leve' (slow and easy) lifestyle; service in local establishments might be unhurried.
- Portuguese is the official language, but you will often hear Forro, the local Creole, spoken in the streets.
- Carry small denominations of local currency (Dobra), as getting change for large bills can be difficult outside the capital.
🍽 Food
A traditional slow-cooked fish or meat stew, often served in family-run eateries near the center.
Fresh seafood seasoned with local herbs, easily found in coastal villages just outside Guadalupe.
Buy these fresh directly from street vendors in the central square.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A lively spot to buy fresh local produce, aromatic spices, and perhaps some simple handmade crafts.
Look for locally grown cocoa beans or rustic chocolate pieces in small village shops.
Take a short trip to this historic plantation for a peaceful, albeit slightly melancholic, walk among colonial ruins.
A short drive away, this impressive bay provides calm waters and quiet relaxation.

Guadalupe is the capital of the Lobata district in northern São Tomé and lies on the wide flat coastal plain between the island capital and the northern volcanic cones. The town arose in the late 18th century around a Marian church dedicated to the patron saint Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, still the iconic landmark on the central square. In the 19th century, Guadalupe developed into an important hub for the cocoa and coffee trade, as the routes from the Lobata mountains and from the port of Fernão Dias converged here. Today the town houses the district administration, an agricultural research center (CIAT-São Tomé), regional schools and small workshops. The surrounding landscape is dominated by banana, cocoa and breadfruit plantations and benefits from gentle hills and a milder climate than the south of the island. During the patron saint festival in early December, Guadalupe fills with pilgrims, traditional dances and market stalls, making it a major cultural center of the north.
