Water temperature…
Blublu is a lively suburb of the district capital Guadalupe in northern São Tomé, situated on a bend of the Água Grande River, where fresh water and alluvial sediments combine to create one of the island's most fertile soil zones. The name onomatopoeically imitates the bubbling of water in the many springs that feed the river. As early as the 19th century, Blublu supplied nearby roças with fresh vegetables, and today it remains one of the island's most important cultivation areas, producing tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant, cabbage and beans in large quantities. At dawn, farming women set off with brimming baskets to the markets of Guadalupe and São Tomé. Characteristic sights include washerwomen working on the riverbanks wrapped in colorful cloths, and the small bamboo-and-concrete bridges connecting the two shores. With the growing population of the north, Blublu is increasingly turning into a semi-urban district where tradition and modernization go hand in hand.
