💡 Tips

  • Enjoy the incredibly fine sand at Micolo beach, which is famous for 'singing' under your feet.
  • Visit during the week to enjoy the peaceful lagoons without the weekend crowds from the capital.
  • The area where the lagoons meet the sea is a fascinating natural site, great for nature photography.
  • Bring plenty of sun protection, as there is very little natural shade on the wide sandy beach.

Micolo is a photogenic coastal village on São Tomé's north coast in the Lobata district, framed by fine white-sand beaches, small lagoons and the edges of a mangrove forest. The settlement began as a seasonal fishing station and became permanently inhabited during the 19th century, when the nearby Roças Fernão Dias and Rio do Ouro started shipping their produce through small landing points. Micolo is considered one of the most beautiful and at the same time least developed stretches of coast on the island: terns, herons and occasionally hawksbill turtles nest at Praia dos Tamarindos and Praia das Conchas beaches. The hinterland holds a flat marshland fed by freshwater lenses, forming one of the most important bird reserves in the country. Residents have traditionally extracted sea salt in shallow evaporation pans, a practice still maintained on a small scale for personal use. The mix of fishing, low-key tourism and conservation makes Micolo a quiet jewel.
