The Port of Ust-Luga, located deep in the Luga Bay of the Gulf of Finland, is one of the most ambitious and fastest-growing maritime infrastructure projects in modern Russia. The port was specifically developed to diversify transport routes for Russian exporters and drastically reduce reliance on transit routes through the Baltic states. Today, Ust-Luga is a versatile mega-port featuring specialized terminals for crude oil, refined petroleum products, liquefied natural gas, coal, fertilizers, and containerized cargo. Also notable is the ferry terminal, which serves as the western terminus for the rail ferry traffic to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The port basin was extensively dredged to be accessible even to deep-draft ocean-going vessels.
